Bradley Stoke Community School was the first in its region which had to comply with the newly published Building Bulletin 93 Acoustics in schools.
This meant natural ventilation through opening windows was unfeasible. Aware of the government drive for low energy, sustainable, naturally ventilated buildings, we were surprised to see that the client’s M&E consultant’s design brief had specified a traditional supply and extract ventilation system.
We elected not to provide this system due to large running costs and potentially poor indoor air quality and developed an innovative solution, where each classroom was provided with an attenuated acoustic air supply system. Each supply system is linked to the intelligent Building Management System, which allows the systems to operate during the evening when daytime temperatures are high to purge the building of excess heat.
